Duronto Rajshahi clinched a thrilling 14-run win over Dhaka Gladiators in a low-scoring game at the Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday. Chasing 145 for victory, the Dhaka Gladiators were 14 runs short and suffered their second defeat of the tournament, after a defeat in the first game against Khulna.
Dhaka opener Imran Nazir was unbeaten on 54 from 45 balls as Nazir almost guided Dhaka to a famous win. Needing 20 runs off the last over bowled by Mohammad Sami, the Gladiators evetually fell short due to an incisive spell of fast bowling by Sami. Sami took the first hat-trick of the inaugural BPL campaign to hand Rajshahi their third win of the competition.
Chittagong Kings are top of the BPL standings with eight points from five games while Dhaka are in second place, with six points from the same number of games. Rajshahi has leapfrogged Barisal to third place, with six points collected from their five games.
Sami finished with figures of 3/23 from his four overs. He was well supported by Monir Hossain, who grabbed two wickets.
Earlier, the Dhaka Gladiators won the toss and decided to field first. Rajshahi posted 144 in their stipulated 20 overs, courtesy of some substantial knocks from Shahzaib Hasan, Zunaed Siddique and Marlon Samuels. Samuels top scored with 36 as the Gladiators picked up wickets at regular intervals.
Elias Sunny put in his best performance so far in the competition, conceding two wickets and giving away only 18 runs from his four overs. Nazmul Hossain also picked up two wickets as the Gladiators put in a disciplined fielding performance.
Marlon Samuels was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his 36 and economical bowling performance.
